Forms & Curriculum
Our curriculum is chosen to align with our goals of an academically robust, Christ-centered education that grows our students in knowledge, virtue and wisdom. It is also chosen to support our hybrid, collaborative model and is structured according to our four forms. Our forms offer students an opportunity to learn with a wider age range than a typical grade level segregation allows. We believe this more closely matches relationships in the world outside of school and gives our students greater opportunity for diverse friendships. All skill based subjects (namely, reading and math) are taught at the student’s grade level. An overview of our program and curriculum for each form is below:
All School Chapel:
Chapel is the foundation for each school day as we begin the day together with God’s word, singing hymns, memorizing a Scripture passage and catechism questions and answers.
Foreign Language:
As a school, we learn the basics of biblical Greek. Greek is a classical language, which gives students an understanding and knowledge of much of our own English language. A foundation in biblical Greek also gives our students competence and skill in later biblical studies.
Form 1:
Grades K-2 are taught reading and spelling skills at their grade level with a phonics based program that sets a solid foundation for all further learning. Traditional manuscript handwriting is taught using weekly Scripture verses. Early composition is taught through student journals and teacher-led writing workshops. Our math curriculum was chosen for its emphasis on number sense, mastery of basic concepts and the confidence it instills in every student.
As a group, Form 1 studies geography to lay a foundation for later history and world studies. Read alouds and poetry instills a love for literature and beautiful language. Nature study teaches students to wonder, ask good questions, record their observations and see God’s hand in all that he has made. Art and music are integrated into the curriculum.
Form 1 sets the foundation for the school years ahead. As such, we are developing a “taste” for what is truly good, beautiful and worth studying. Like a child develops a taste for healthy food early in life, so we strive to help our students desire what is truly good from the earliest age.
Specific curriculums used: All About Reading, All About Spelling, Math With Confidence, A Reason for Handwriting, Beautiful Feet Books, various read alouds and poetry resources, the Holy Bible, various nature study resources
Form 2:
Grades 3-5 are beginning a more formal approach to many subject areas as they build on early foundational skills.
Math continues to have an emphasis on number sense, mastery and confidence while also adding a strong problem solving and critical thinking component. In spelling, students continue to hone their skills with our phonics based program. Formal grammar begins with a three year rotation that covers all of the parts of speech, basic sentence mechanics and proper capitalization and punctuation rules. Composition is a group subject that includes discussion, brainstorming and room for creative play as students are introduced to multiple genres and purposes of writing. History/geography is learned in a 3 year cycle with Ancient History, Medieval History and World Geography. Timelines, songs, hands-on projects and integrated literature make these time periods and far away places come alive. Science is taught from a Christian worldview with a Charlotte Mason notebooking approach as well as an emphasis on God as the Creator of all we know. Vocabulary is increased as students are introduced to Latin and Greek root words. A love of literature continues with literature guides that facilitate important questions and discussions around good books. Literature and poetry are selected to align with history and geography topics. Art and music appreciation is integrated into the history time period that is being studied.
Specific curriculums used: Math with Confidence, Beast Academy, All About Spelling, WriteShop Junior, Story of the World, Apologia Science, Vocabulary from Classical Roots, Memoria Press Literature and Poetry Guides
Form 3:
Grades 6-8 will begin more formal composition with the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) paired with their excellent grammar program. More extensive vocabulary is learned with Latin and Greek root words and phrases. Literature and poetry discussions take shape as Socratic discussions as students learn to ask good questions and wrestle with big ideas. History and Geography form a three year cycle with Early Modern History, Modern History and Arkansas History/World Cultures. Science topics covered are Earth Science, Physical Science and one year of Formal Logic. Art and Music appreciation operates on a three year cycle that matches the time period being studied.
Specific curriculum used: Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW), Fix-it Grammar, Memoria Press Literature Guides, Vocabulary from Classical Roots, Story of the World, Apologia Science, Introduction to Formal Logic
Important Note: For our first year as a school, Form 3 will have a “Bring Your Own Math” program. Most of our students are coming from homeschool families that are using a variety of resources for math with students working at their individual (but not necessarily grade) level. For this reason, we have decided to facilitate what our families have already been working so hard on in this area. Students will be required to bring their own workbook and online (or textbook based) lessons for each school day. Our teacher will be available to facilitate, oversee, answer questions and provide accountability for students. For students coming from a private or public school situation: please ask us for our best recommendations for a math program and we will help you get set up!
